New Real-Time Cockpit Runway Incursions and Traffic Awareness Alerting Solution Demo Webinar [Honeywell SURF-A: Automated Audio and Visual Alerts on EGPWS Display; Advanced Algorithms and ADS-B to Alert Pilots of Incursion within 30 Seconds; more]

Register to view this On-Demand Webinar (recorded 19th September 2024) to see the latest advances in real-time runway safety solutions, with a first look at the new Surface Alert System (SURF-A), due to be released in 2025 from industry leaders Honeywell. As you will see SURF-A is a runway safety software solution specifically designed for cockpits and which seamlessly integrates with cockpit displays. Using video demos of the solution, the Honeywell team will show you how the software establishes the current location and movement of all ADS-B equipped traffic within the runway engagement zone, during taxi, takeoff, final approach, landing, and rollout. You will also see how it uses advanced algorithms to identify anything that could cause an incursion within the next 30 seconds.  The pilots are then alerted in real-time with both audio and visual alerts (on the EGPWS display: Traffic on Final, Traffic Behind, Traffic on Runway, Traffic Intersecting Runway), allowing them crucial time to avoid any accidents.  As you will see SURF-A has been compared to adding an ‘extra set of eyes’ in the cockpit, which is particularly important as air traffic expands, airports become more congested, and the number of runway safety incidents increases; industry estimates show that every day an incursion happens somewhere in the world.

The Webinar begins with a look at the challenges facing airlines and pilots with runway incursions. Pilots are the last line of defense to prevent collisions and avoid close calls on busy runways, yet current solutions alert the control tower to potential problems but don’t alert pilots directly, which can delay response time.  As you will see SURF-A enhances situational awareness and gives flight crew the right information, at the right time and in the right place to enhance runway safety.  Next the Honeywell presenters showcase the technology behind SURF-A including GPS data, ADS-B, and advanced analytics to pinpoint the exact location of traffic hazards on or near the runway.  You’ll also learn how SURF-A fits into Honeywell’s other popular expanding portfolio of runway safety products, such as SmartRunway for wrong surface alerts and enhanced situation awareness, and SmartLanding to prevent hard or long landings. Finally, using real-world examples of runway incursions at airports such as JFK, along with video demos from the cockpit, you will see how SURF-A takes runway safety to new heights.

The Webinar is divided into 4 key sections:

  • The Growing Challenges facing Airlines / Pilots with Runway Incursions
Flying is recognized as one of the safest travel methods but, despite enhanced safety, there has been a significant increase in runway safety incidents and accidents since 2022. Pilots are the last line of defense to In avoiding near misses and prevent collisions on busy runways, pilots are the last line of defense yet, while current solutions alert the control tower to potential problems, they don’t alert pilots directly, and that can delay response time.  You will see how SURF-A enhances situational awareness by giving flight crew the right information, at the right time and in the right place to enhance runway safety.

  • Honeywell SURF-A Technology and Latest Testing Results
Next you will learn how the solution works, utilizing GPS data, ADS-B to pinpoint the exact location of traffic hazards on or near the runway during taxi, takeoff, final approach, landing, and rollout, and how it uses advanced algorithms to identify anything that could cause an incursion within the next 30 seconds.  The pilots are will then be alerted in real-time with both audio and visual alerts (on EGPWS display: Traffic on Final, Traffic Behind, Traffic on Runway, Traffic Intersecting Runway), allowing critical time for them to avoid any threats.  The Honeywell team will also provide updates regarding the latest solution testing, and when SURF-A will be available on the market.

  • Honeywell SURF-A Video Demos and Real-World Runway Incursions
Next, using videos of demos from the cockpit, you will see SURF-A in action, showing both audio and visual alerts on the EGPWS display: Traffic on Final, Traffic Behind, Traffic on Runway, Traffic Intersecting Runway.  You will see how the alerts only occur if the solution’s advanced algorithms identify anything that could cause an incursion within the next 30 seconds in order that the pilots can take appropriate action to avoid an accident. If everything is going well, the pilots won’t see or hear the system. The Honeywell team will also look at recent runway incursions at airports such as AUS (Austin), and JFK, and how SURF-A would have intervened in these scenarios.

  • Honeywell’s Portfolio of Runway Safety Products: SmartRunway & SmartLanding
Finally you will see an overview of Honeywell’s popular and growing portfolio of runway safety products and how SURF-A fits into that portfolio. These solutions include SmartRunway and SmartLanding, which are currently installed on about 5,000 commercial aircraft – around 20% of the world’s fleet.  The presenters will show you how these solutions integrate seamlessly with the EGPWS cockpit displays to assist Pilots in avoiding runway incursions, over-runs and wrong-surface landings, and take-offs. You will also see how SmartRunway and SmartLanding use aircraft position data and an accurate runway database to determine whether an aircraft is in the correct energy state and position for landing. On takeoff, it also checks that the runway surface is long enough for the type of aircraft. As you will see SURF-A takes those capabilities up a notch by accessing data directly from the ADS-B equipment installed on aircraft and ground vehicles.

Next you will see the concept of Established on RNP AR, allowing simultaneous parallel approaches at large airports, including how the usual mode 1 with Instrument Landing System (ILS) is detrimental to performance and how RNP AR can drastically reduce track miles. Finally, you will see a step-by-step guide to gaining operational approval – a process that can be confusing, especially when flying overseas; and you will learn about the NAVBLUE complete RNP AR Implementation end-to-end solution that is tailored for airlines and easy to implement for ATC.

This webinar will be divided into 5 sections:

  • What is Required Navigation Performance with Authorization Required (RNP AR)?
First the NAVBLUE team will provide a brief reminder of the RNP AR concept: Definition, difference with RNP, and an example of a common use of RNP AR for approach.  As you will see, RNP AR is a PBN navigation specification based on a satellite positioning system. Authorizing a navigation accuracy from 0.3NM down to 0.1NM and turns after the final approach point, the RNP AR concept offers significant operational and safety benefits, positively impacting fuel consumption and pilot workload. Traditional implementation of RNP AR can improve access to low visibility airports, allow improved trajectories through mountainous terrain, and exploit aircraft performance at high-altitude.

  • Case Study 1: Using RNP AR Departures to Improve Payload and Thrust.
Next you will see the opportunities to use RNP AR for departures, and the benefits it can bring to obstacle optimization and consequently to payload improvements; you will see the careful consideration to performance that must be given directly at the procedure design level. The NAVBLUE team will showcase a case study from Kathmandu Airport showing how RNP AR allows navigation accuracy down to 0.3 NM and below.  You will see how RNP AR Departures optimize payload and thrust.

  • Case Study 2: Using Established on RNP AR (EoR) Concept for Parallel Approaches.
Next you will see the opportunities for using Established on RNP AR to improve capacity and reduce fuel consumption at large airports.  The NAVBLUE team will run through a definition of the concept, as well as an explanation of the current limitations with parallel approaches using Instrument Landing System (ILS), followed by details and information regarding the constraints and considerations for EoR. You will see a case study from Tianjin Binhai Airport, showcasing how EoR significantly improves the efficiency of simultaneous independent approaches:

    – The RNP AR trajectory is much shorter than the ILS, with a track miles reduction of between 10 and 30 miles per approach.
    – The ILS trajectory itself is also shortened as the constraint for 1000 feet vertical separation is removed.
  • Step-by-Step Guide to Gaining Operational Approval for RNP AR
Next, the NAVBLUE team will cover the notions and concepts on RNP AR Operational Approval. Specifically, they will summarize the general approval requirements, and specificities to operate RNP AR in a foreign country. Finally, you will see the EASA generic vs specific approval and its practical implications.
