Air Canada and CAE Name Eight Recipients of the 2023 Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship for Aspiring Women in Aviation

Today, on International Women’s Day, Air Canada and CAE announced the recipients of the 2023 Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship, which provides financial assistance to Canadian women studying to become commercial pilots or aircraft maintenance engineers. This year, the two Montreal-based global aviation companies have joined forces to double the number of recipients, awarding scholarships to eight young women from across Canada. In addition to the $5,000 scholarship, CAE’s four recipients will become CAE Women in Flight – Air Canada Ambassadors and help inspire more women to become commercial pilots.

The Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship was established in honour of Air Canada’s first female pilot to help foster the next generation of women following in her trailblazing footsteps and is awarded annually in conjunction with the Northern Lights Aero Foundation.

“Air Canada is extremely proud of the leadership position it has taken in cultivating diversity, equity and inclusion in the aviation industry, with women well represented at every level and across all branches of the airline. On International Women’s Day, being able to provide support to these incredibly talented and driven young women through the Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship firmly demonstrates Air Canada and CAE’s work fostering the next generation of women in their pursuit of careers in this exciting industry. We know how crucial this support is to young women seeking non-traditional aviation careers, and we have seen results first-hand from the success of past winners. Congratulations to this year’s winners,” said Arielle Meloul-Wechsler, Executive Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer and Public Affairs at Air Canada.

“When we relaunched the CAE Women in Flight Ambassador program last year, our objective was to grow the movement, and we are thrilled to partner with Air Canada to support more women pursuing careers in aviation. Today, the fruits of that partnership are being seen as eight women from diverse backgrounds get a well-deserved boost to continue their training, said Nick Leontidis, CAE’s Group President, Civil Aviation. “Diversity equity and inclusion are core values at CAE. Currently, only five percent of commercial pilots are women, and our newest Women in Flight Ambassadors will join six others to help spread the word about this exciting profession and serve as role models to young women who aspire to a career at the controls of a commercial airliner.”

“I am delighted that Air Canada and CAE have partnered to double the number of Captain Judy Cameron scholarships for 2023. Each recipient has shown great determination in their training, and the willingness to encourage and inspire others in their aviation journey. As the scholarship goes into its fourth year, it is wonderful to hear the success stories of former recipients. Two women are flying as First Officers, another is a fire patrol pilot, and two more are flight instructors. Thank you to Air Canada and CAE for helping to make their dreams a reality,” said Judy Cameron, Boeing 777 Captain at Air Canada (retired), and Director of the Northern Lights Aero Foundation.

Air Canada winners of the Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship are:

  • Amanda Tosto, Surrey, British Columbia
  • Hélène Trudeau, Beausejour, Manitoba
  • Charlotte Thorley, Grimsby, Ontario
  • Chanelle Wilson, Coldstream, British Columbia

CAE Women in Flight ambassadors:

  • Meera Bissonauth, Mississauga, Ontario
  • Mia Cochran, North Bay, Ontario
  • Jaime Hanson, Rocky Mountain House, Alberta
  • Kyra Jarvis, Kingston, Nova Scotia

About Captain Judy Cameron

Judy Cameron became the first female pilot hired by Air Canada, Canada’s largest airline, in April 1978 at the age of 23. She was the first woman to graduate from Selkirk College’s Aviation Technology Program in 1975. Throughout her flying career of 40 years and over 23,000 hours, she has flown the DC-3, Twin Otter, Hawker Siddeley 748, DC-9, Lockheed 1011, Airbus 320, Boeing 767, and Boeing 777 to the far corners of the world. She became a captain in 1997 and in 2010, she became the first female captain in Canada of a Boeing 777, the largest aircraft in Air Canada’s fleet. She retired in 2015, received the Elsie MacGill Northern Lights award in the Flight Operations category that year, and in 2016 she was chosen by the 99s (International Organization of Women Pilots) to be on its Canadian postage stamp.

In 2019, Air Canada committed to awarding $20,000 per year for three years toward the Captain Judy Cameron scholarship, and in 2021 re-committed its support for an additional three years. Last year, CAE added its support to the scholarship through its Women in Flight ambassador program.

The Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship is open to women who are Canadian citizens and who are enrolled in a fixed wing aviation flight program at a college, university, or flight school, or an aircraft repair and maintenance program anywhere in Canada.

The Scholarship is administered by the Northern Lights Aero Foundation, which inspires and celebrates Canadian women in aviation and aerospace with mentorship, scholarships, a speaker’s bureau, and junior board, along with an annual award event.

Leading NAVBLUE solution N-Flight Planning improves accuracy and efficiency through collaboration with EUROCONTROL Network Manager

 Toulouse, France, 13 December 2022

With the support of the EUROCONTROL Network Manager, NAVBLUE’s N-Flight Planning (N-FP) has integrated new EUROCONTROL B2B services, providing a step-change in optimizing European routes for efficiency and compliance while also decreasing dispatcher workload using automation.

Whereas previous versions of N-FP used EUROCONTROL services to query routes and for flight plan validation, they weren’t fully integrated into the workflow and optimisation process. Through discussions and collaboration with EUROCONTROL, NAVBLUE has integrated a suite of new services which enhance user’s situational awareness, simplify flight planning by leveraging automation, and reduce costs and CO2 emissions through optimal routing.

The new functionalities contribute to NAVBLUE’s vision of true manage-by-exception workflow:

  • The initial planning & filing can be fully automated, using NAVBLUE’s optimization engine to work in the background to search for the most optimized, compliant route available;
  • When disruptions occur in the network and the dispatcher needs to find alternative solutions, the new functionalities facilitate the re-routing work by displaying the regulations and searching for new routes that avoid problem areas to minimize delays, allowing the user to submit a new plan to EUROCONTROL only if the delay is acceptable.

Richard Shehab, Head of Portfolio Business Growth at NAVBLUE, said: “N-Flight Planning is constantly evolving to suit the unique needs of the rapidly changing aviation industry. The density and complexity of the European airspace required a shift towards a collaborative approach to building and optimizing routes within constrained airspace. Combining NAVBLUE resources and expertise with EUROCONTROL ensures our product continues to be an industry leader, which directly benefits our customers.” Iacopo Prissinotti, Director Network Management at EUROCONTROL commented: “As the European Network Manager, our goal is to make aviation operations as efficient and sustainable as possible. We have set ourselves the target to provide business solutions for aviation that leverage the latest technology and reflect our close collaboration with all operational stakeholders.”

The new functionalities are available immediately to the N-FP community. Airlines can reach out to NAVBLUE’s 24-hour Support Department to learn more and how to use the new changes.

eTechLog8 Fully Approved in Kuwait with Jazeera Airways

Conduce and Jazeera Airways are pleased to announce that on 15 December 2022 Jazeera Airways received full approval from the Kuwait Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DCGA) to use eTechLog8 as the primary Tech Log system and remove the paper-based processes.

Jazeera Airways is the first airline in Kuwait to fully implement an electronic technical logbook (ELB) solution and have achieved the milestone in record time, just 8 months from contract agreement to full Technical Log paperless operations.

This is particularly impressive considering Jazeera’s busy fleet of 19 aircraft. In addition to the ELB project, multiple new routes have been added, and Jazeera have taken delivery of two new A320 Neo aircraft, which used eTechLog8 in parallel with the paper from their very first flight.

The first paperless flight was operated by 9K-CAK on Monday 19th December, from Kuwait to Istanbul on Flight J9301.

Head of Engineering, Raghed Al Kaasamanicommented “We are delighted to have received full approval for eTechLog8 and are very proud to be the first ELB operator in Kuwait.”

Conduce CEO Steve Russell noted that “Jazeera Airways going paperless on the now fully approved eTechLog8 is a superb way to end 2022 for both Conduce and Jazeera. The short project turnaround demonstrates how the airline use of an ELB has come of age and how a well-managed implementation can quickly deliver significant cost and efficiency gains.”

About Conduce: With offices in the UK and Australia, Conduce provide robust mobile solutions for the world’s airlines. eTechLog8 is the leading ELB solution to replace paper technical logbooks. Certified around the world, eTechLog8 is also fully integrated with leading MIS/MRO back-office airline systems. ASL Airlines France and ASL Airlines Belgium join ASL AMOS Environment

ASL Airlines France has become the latest of ASL’s European airlines to be merged into ASL Aviation Holdings AMOS and to manage its own AMOS entity within the existing productive environment. In October 2022, ASL Airline France were migrated fully. In 2021, ASL Airlines Belgium had followed the same path.

The “Multi-Entity” functions in AMOS allow multiple, financially independent entities to work in one common AMOS environment.

The project to transfer ASLB’s fleet into the existing ASL Group environment was underway when COVID-19 struck. Due to the new challenges brought about by COVID-19, the project could understandably have been impacted, but it remained on track due to the project team re-organising themselves and adapting with impressive agility. Training, data migration, workshops and user acceptance testing had to be staged remotely due to travel bans and home office obligations. The project to transfer ASLF’s fleet, commenced to coincide with the reopening of flight routes and the slow lifting of restrictions around Europe.

With their extensive in-house knowledge gained from their own AMOS implementation, and the daily support of the system, members from the ASL Group AMOS Competence Center, led by Stephen Prescott, supported the implementation project in large parts, whereas Swiss-AS provided its professional expertise for the training of the 40 new AMOS users in Belgium and 90 new AMOS users in France. Now, there are 220+ users within the ASL Group, managing a fleet of 80 aircraft in AMOS.

“To have taken the bold decision to continue such a multi-faceted project, which involved parties from multiple countries and companies, whilst bringing new aircraft online and in such extraordinary circumstances that left no part of our industry untouched, was no mean feat. Adding both ASL France and ASL Belgium to an existing environment is also once more evidence of the scalability of AMOS, which is capable of managing a single aircraft or a fleet of hundreds,” states Fabiano Faccoli, CEO of Swiss-AS.

“AMOS is a key project for ASL and the ASL and Swiss-AS teams demonstrated their commitment and innovative attitude in integrating both ASL France and ASL Belgium into our Group AMOS environment despite the background of the pandemic. As a result, we have made a significant step forward as we develop European centres of excellence and introduce group-wide systems that increase our efficiency and allow us to offer the best possible quality of service to our customers,” said Dave Andrew, Chief Executive, ASL Aviation Holdings.
