Smart4Aviation’s Electronic Flight Bag application certified for Inmarsat’s SB-S platform

New solution now available on Inmarsat SB-S, the world’s first and only digital airline operations platform, to enhance productivity, operational awareness and efficiency

24 April 2019: Inmarsat, the world leader in global mobile satellite communications, has certified Smart4Aviation’s Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) application, Smart MOBILE, for use on its award-winning SB-S digital aircraft operations platform.

Smart MOBILE is a unique solution that allows pilots, cabin crew and other airline employees to access, complete and submit documentation quickly and efficiently on their mobile devices via a single portal, helping to increase productivity, operational awareness and efficiency. It also enables peer-to-peer communication, ACARS messaging and provides instant access to briefing packages and important flight-related information, such as up-to-date weather reports and potential load, fuel and hazard alerts.

The application can be tailored to match each airline customer’s exact requirements to deliver tangible cost savings. Benefits include a reduction in the frequency and duration of flight delays, together with improvements to on-time performance. In addition, increased automation and real-time information translates to a reduction in workload, resulting in less bottlenecks for both flight and cabin crew.

Smart MOBILE is the latest in a range of value-added operational and safety applications to be certified via Inmarsat’s Aviation Certified Application Provider (CAP) Programme for SB-S. Other available applications include flight profile optimisation, weather information, digital navigation charts, and aircraft diagnostics and performance monitoring.

Mike Lewis, CEO of Smart4Aviation, said: “We are excited about this partnership, as it allows us to take another major step forward and enhance our products within a connected aircraft environment. Inmarsat is a leading provider of satellite communications solutions to airlines, operators and passengers worldwide, keeping people and systems connected at thousands of feet in the air. Together, we will be able to provide real time situational awareness to flight crew during all flight phases. These benefits will result in more efficient decision making, leading to less disruption resulting in increased cost savings and enhanced flight safety. Together with our new partner, we are ready for the future.”

John Broughton, Senior Vice President of Aircraft Operations and Safety, Inmarsat Aviation, said: “Smart4Aviation is a global industry-leader in proving best-in-class EFB technology to airlines. With the launch of Smart MOBILE on Inmarsat’s SB-S, we look forward to bringing Smart4Aviation’s innovative solutions to our commercial airline customers, driving operational efficiency and enhancing safety with a cost-effective, tailored offering.”

The SB-S digital aircraft operations platform is powered by Inmarsat’s advanced global L-band satellite constellation, which has underpinned safety services for 40 years. Inmarsat is scheduled to launch two additional L-band payloads in 2020 and 2021, further cementing its long-term commitment to offering highly reliable services over this spectrum.

Global Aviation Cloud: Lufthansa Systems provides complete solutions as cloud services

Global Aviation Cloud: Lufthansa Systems provides complete solutions as cloud services
Successful implementation of NetLine, Lido and SIRAX® applications on cloud platform | Improved service quality and level of innovation

Raunheim, April 17, 2019 – Lufthansa Systems today announced that it has integrated its solutions for flight operations (NetLine), route planning and navigation (Lido) and finance management (SIRAX®) into a new cloud delivery platform following a successful project phase. The Global Aviation Cloud is a cloud service developed specifically to meet the needs and security standards of airlines. Lufthansa Systems has thus created a forward-looking infrastructure for its customers which deliver administrative, operational and technological benefits. The ultimate goal is to offer the entire Lufthansa Systems product portfolio as a cloud service in the near future.

“The strategic shift from monolithic legacy systems to cloud services is a major challenge in the aviation industry. Technologies such as AIX, which was the basis for the development of our Lido product, are not easy for cloud platforms to handle because they are closely tied to hardware. We therefore completely overhauled Lido’s software architecture so that we could expedite the creation of the cloud,” said Oliver Grimm, Head of IT Infrastructure Development, Technology & Information Security at Lufthansa Systems. “We successfully tested the various solutions from the cloud, and the first customers have already migrated. This has laid the foundation for the innovative and future-proof Global Aviation Cloud.”

Thanks to cloud solutions, it is often no longer necessary to run applications, systems and resources locally on a physical server (on-premise). Instead, they can be provided and used as needed in the form of software as a service (SaaS). “With the SaaS model we offer our customers full service from a single source so they can concentrate on their core business. As the service provider, Lufthansa Systems handles all of the IT administration, including maintenance and software updates,” said Grimm.

A complete cloud governance model was defined and set up as part of the Global Aviation Cloud. This also covers the creation of new teams and roles. The Operations Center in Budapest, for example, is responsible for infrastructure operations and was established alongside the pure application operations. The end-to-end managed service is therefore completely within the domain of Lufthansa Systems.

Lufthansa Systems primarily uses Microsoft Azure as its public cloud provider. Special technical set-ups relating mainly to security aspects turn the public cloud into a virtual private data center. With a growing number of data centers in 54 regions around the world, Azure can provide services in close proximity to customer sites, which enables faster data transmission. The strategic partnership with the cloud provider additionally increases the flexibility, scalability and security of the applications.

By 2021, the more than 70 customers using Lido, NetLine and SIRAX® products should be able to access the solutions on-demand from the Global Aviation Cloud.

Lufthansa Systems will offer its NetLine, Lido and SIRAX® solutions as a cloud service.

EASA certifies new Altimeter Setting Monitor function on A320

EASA certifies new Altimeter Setting Monitor function on A320 Family, as part of Landing Surveillance suite

Toulouse, 17/04/2019

  • Airbus and NAVBLUE introduce new functionalities over and above ROPS alerting, to further develop its comprehensive runway safety solution to enhance safety at landing for passengers and crew.
  • The first function of this Landing Surveillance suite, Altimeter Setting Monitor, receives its Type Certification

NAVBLUE in partnership with, Airbus, Honeywell Aerospace and Lufthansa Group achieve the integration and certification of selected functionalities of Honeywell SmartLanding® over and above ROPS (Runway Overrun Prevention System). Landing Surveillance is derived from the Honeywell SmartLanding® technology and is a set of monitoring and alerting functions designed to increase flight crew situational awareness during approach and landing.

Landing Surveillance is composed of 3 functions: Altimeter Setting Monitor, Approach Stabilisation Monitor, and Taxiway Landing Monitor.

Altimeter Setting Monitor is now certified and available on A320 Family. The Altimeter Setting Monitor can detect barometric reference setting entry errors and starts monitoring at Transition Altitude. Based on real-time conditions, the Altimeter Setting Monitor cross-checks the GPS altitude versus the barometric corrected altitude. This function issues an advisory alert to the crew in case a barometric reference setting error is detected.

The Approach Stabilisation Monitor and Taxiway Landing Monitor are planned to be certified in the next release. Approach Stabilisation Monitor will take the aircraft performance into account to issue an advisory alert in the case of excessive height and/or speed deviations. Taxiway Landing Monitor will actively monitor the aircraft trajectory and alert flight crew if the aircraft is not lined up with a runway below a minimum altitude.

ROPS is a performance-based alerting system developed by Airbus to guide and assist the flight crew in the go-around decision-making process and in the timely application of deceleration means on-ground. ROPS is certified by all leading authorities, available and in service on the Airbus A320, A330, A350 and A380 aircraft families.

“We are delighted to introduce the first part of the Landing Surveillance trio, which will offer our customers an additional innovative product to complement ROPS, which has already performed over 3+ million safe landings and is trusted by over 90 operators worldwide”. concludes Pierre Madrange Vice President, On-board+ NAVBLUE.
