Webinar Overview

*This Webinar is for airlines and aircraft operators only…

Register to attend this Webinar and join Azul’s flight operations team as they take you inside the project showing how they used a fully data-driven approach powered by AI-Driven technology (SkyBreathe® Analytics from OpenAirlines) to audit existing ATC procedures and flight charts at Viracopos Airport in Sao Paulo, to identify inefficiencies, and to drive measurable fuel savings by optimizing approach procedures, resulting in saving of 1.5M liters of fuel.  The Azul team will also walk you through how they were able to analyze the raw FDR data from over 9 million flights utilizing the new SkyBreathe® Custom Flight Indicators module and, with no coding needed, study in detail all TMA procedures, providing the team with the flexibility to dig deeper and build a stronger case for operational change.  During the Webinar you will see detailed analysis of each step to improve flight paths and ATC efficiency across São Paulo operations, with STAR and SID procedure modifications, ultimately delivering a drop in average weighted fuel burn from 127 kg to 70 kg on the UTLOT procedure, 31.88 kg saved per flight on the new ENTIT1A STAR, monthly time savings of 55 hours on departures and 100 hours on arrivals, and more. Finally, you will learn how the team plan to roll out the same detailed analysis per leg and per waypoint, to identify further savings and initial TMA optimization at secondary hubs at Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro.

Next the OpenAirlines team will walk you through a demo of the brand-new SkyBreathe® Custom Flight Indicators module – a powerful, user-defined flight event detection feature that gives flight operations teams the flexibility to dig deeper and build advanced, operation-specific analytics with full autonomy, and with no-coding needed.  You will see how teams can quickly unlock the full power of FDR data with a fully customizable interface, define their own metrics, and run advanced studies across thousands of flights to surface savings they didn’t know were there. Detailed analyses include: creating custom advanced flight events and indicators from FDR data; running studies across other SkyBreathe® modules, like the Query Editor and Maps; discovering how much fuel and CO₂ was saved during specific procedures; and more.

Whether airlines and operators are exploring procedure optimization at their own hub or looking for practical ways to advance their fuel program, this Webinar delivers the detail that flight ops teams need.

The Webinar is divided into the following three key sections:

  • Azul’s strategy to go the extra mile in its fuel efficiency program shifting from setting foundations to a fully data-driven approach using cutting-edge technology to uncover new savings opportunities through ATC procedures and chart optimization. You will learn how:

    – Over the years, Azul has laid a solid foundation on fuel efficiency through different initiatives, starting with defining sustainability goals, fleet modernization, and operational optimization strategies.
    – Last year, the airline shifted its focus to go the extra mile by identifying and acting on remaining fuel-saving opportunities with SkyBreathe® — specifically auditing existing ATC procedures and flight charts at Viracopos Airport (VCP-SBKP).
    – A targeted fuel-saving initiative was launched to improve approach procedures and flight trajectory performance at one of Brazil’s key hubs, delivering measurable results: 1.5 million liters of jet fuel saved, impacting approximately 3,700 flights per month across 12 modifications in arrivals and departures.
    – Establishing a dedicated Flight Operations team to drive fuel initiatives and procedure optimization, strengthening collaboration across the airline.
  • Discover how Azul leverages SkyBreathe® Analytics to track progress, gain actionable insights, and turn operational data into measurable performance improvements through real use cases and results:

    – Auditing existing ATC procedures and flight charts at Viracopos Airport to identify inefficiencies in approach procedures with SkyBreathe®.
    – PROJECT VIRACOPOS (VCP-SBKP) – Changes in the TMA procedures: how Azul identified, built a case for, and drove operational change at Sao Paulo’s Viracopos hub. STAR and SID procedure modifications delivered a reduction in flight time and ground distance, lowering fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions across the TMA-SP area.
    – Flight Trajectory Optimization: Azul’s approach to improving flight paths and ATC efficiency across Sao Paulo operations based on SkyBreathe® data. Key example: the EDMUS procedure was shortened from 135.3NM to 95.8NM — a 39.5NM reduction in flight distance.
    – Improving approach procedures by quantifying the fuel and CO₂ impact of procedure changes across thousands of flights using SkyBreathe®’s analytics. Average weighted fuel burn on the UTLOT procedure dropped from 127 kg before to 70 kg after the changes; the new STAR ENTIT1A reduced fuel consumption by 31.88 kg per flight on average, shortened ground distance by approximately 6NM, and cut flight time by 83 seconds per flight.
    – Building a stronger case for operational change using SkyBreathe® Custom Flight Indicators to produce operation-specific evidence for ATC stakeholders. Over 9 million flights were analyzed throughout the project, with monthly time savings reaching 55 hours on departures and 100 hours on arrivals at Viracopos.
  • A live demonstration of SkyBreathe® Analytics Custom Flight Indicators and how this powerful, user-defined flight event detection module can help airlines conduct highly customized and autonomous fuel efficiency studies. The demo will walk you through the module’s key features:

    – The brand new SkyBreathe® Custom Flight Indicators feature (user-defined flight event detection), including an intuitive interface to define and detect custom flight events tailored to analyze specific aspects of your flight operations — giving teams full autonomy to investigate what matters most.
    – SkyBreathe® Custom Flight Indicators – FDR Data module: where teams can unlock the full power of their Flight Data Recorder data quickly and without developer skills, running advanced studies across thousands of flights to surface savings they didn’t know were there.
    – SkyBreathe® Custom Flight Indicators – Advanced Analysis module: where teams can create custom advanced flight events and indicators from FDR data, define their own metrics, and use those indicators across other SkyBreathe® modules like the Query Editor and Maps. In the Viracopos project, this enabled Azul to define two precise points of interest — Point A (a common reference within <1NM of waypoint ENTIT) and Point B (beginning of the landing phase) — and measure three custom indicators: average fuel burn from ENTIT to touchdown, average time spent during the STAR procedure, and average ground distance flown.
