Nowadays airport ground operations are based on established common practices which are not efficient and never evolved over the years. In order to deal with the growing airport traffic issues expected within 20 years, Safety Line together with research partners (ENVISA, IFSTTAR, LIP6, Paris AƩroport) launched in 2015 the AWACS (Airside Watch for Amelioration of Capacity and Safety) project. Three years later, the successful collaboration came to an end with the creation of an effective decision-support tool for airports, based on the analysis of radar data.
Today, Safety Line research team wants to go further : not only measure, but also optimize and automize the ground traffic operations to significantly reduce airport CO2 emissions. A new research project named SWAG (Smarter Ways for Airport Ground traffic) has thus been launched and brings in two significant innovations : optimizing and automizing the ground traffic by reducing the taxiing time and distance.
Recognised as an innovative and useful project for parisian airports, but also for all airports around the world, the SWAG project has been funded by the Ile-de-France Region.
